An ancient high-seas design built for the backwoods.

Over a thousand years ago a Norse weaponry designer created the Viking axe. That form has remained recognizable and largely unchanged ever since. For good reason. The Freya™ /fray-uh/ Viking-style utility axe is a powerful everyday axe that touches on ancient design roots and thrives in the outdoors.

Elmer Roush's charity of choice for this axe is the Green Beret Foundation.

Established in 2016, the Forged by War® program spearheaded a collaboration between CRKT and Veterans, inviting real life warriors to apply their knowledge and experience to design a specialty line of mission-ready knives and tools. In addition to receiving commission on their designs, a portion of the profits are donated to the Veterans’ charity of choice. CRKT is proud to offer this dedicated collection to support the participating charities on a national level.

Elmer has spent his fair share of time on the battlefield. But these days, what really gives him excitement is battling hot steel with a hammer as a blacksmith. He enjoys hand forging functional edged tools and brings over 40 years of experience to the Forged By War™ program. Axes, froes, hatchets, and historical replicas, such as Viking axes, are his specialty. Though his designs look modern, they’re actually based on tools and implements that go back thousands of years.
