Innovation

At CRKT we have always focused on bringing you the most innovative new ideas in the knife and tool industry. Our purpose is not just to be different, but to provide useful improvements, including fast folder opening systems, folder locking systems, carry systems, serrations, new multitools, and even entirely new product concepts. That may explain why leading custom knifemakers and industrial designers come to us with their ideas, knowing that we are open to developing new products. The following examples in this web section highlight some of our most notable and successful innovations, but we want to stress that this section really has no end, because we expect to add more exciting products in the coming months.

FOLDER OPENING SYSTEMS

M16Z-Flipper

Flipper

What it is: A blade tang or extension which allows a folder blade to be quickly opened by pressing the flipper.

Benefits: Gives fast one-hand ambidextrous opening from the simplest possible design with no additional moving parts. Also acts as a blade guard when open.

How it works: Flippers require an open build frame and a low friction pivot bearing system. The blade stop must be specially engineered externally (M16®) or internally (Ripple™). A ball detent holds the blade in the closed position when folded.

Found on CRKT models: M16®, M21™, Ripple™, Premonition™, Tuition®, Summa®, Zilla-Tool® family.

OutBurst® assisted opening

What it is: An assisted opening mechanism which springs the blade open once the thumb stud has been nudged outward approximately 20-30 degrees.

Benefits: Gives fast one-hand opening of folders with a high degree of security that the blade will not accidentally open.

How it works: A long torsion bar engages a cam on the internal portion of the blade. The cam is ground so that when the blade is closed, the spring provides bias to keep it closed. When the blade is nudged open past 20-30 degrees, the spring leverage changes to propel the blade fully open.

Found on CRKT models: Delegate™, Vertex™, Ignitor®, Lift Off®, The Natural®, My Tighe™, Mini My Tighe™, Rave®, Badger™, Notorious™, M4™, Fire Spark™, Hissatsu™ Folders.

Patents: OutBurst assist is protected by U.S. Patents.

Ignitor-Fire-Safe

Fire Safe® actuation

What it is: A safety system for CRKT models with OutBurst® assisted opening which provides exceptional safety by locking the blade in the closed position.

Benefits: Provides both safety and convenience in a simple release mechanism.

How it works: When closed, the blade is safely locked in place by the Fire Safe pin which engages the locking liner. It cannot be opened until the safety button on the end of the thumb stud is firmly depressed and the thumb stud is nudged outward. Then the OutBurst® assist takes over and instantly opens the blade for use.

Found on CRKT models: Delegate™, Vertex™, Ignitor®, Lift Off®, Rave®, Badger™, Fire Spark™.

Patents: Fire Safe® is patent pending.

IKBS-Close-Up

IKBS™ ball bearing pivot system

What it is: The Ikoma Korth Bearing System (IKBS) is a ball bearing pivot system for folding knives.

Benefits: IKBS gives exceptionally fast and smooth folder opening and closing with very low initial friction. The pivot requires very little maintenance and has a long service life.

How it works: IKBS uses uncaged ball bearings at the blade pivot which are held in reliefs machined into the folder frame and blade. Typically, the blade is opened by the nudge of a flipper, and is held in the closed position by a ball detent.

Found on CRKT models: Ripple™, Eros™

IKOMA LOCK SAFETY (ILS)

What it is: A secondary lock safety mechanism that is integrated between the locking liner and the knife frame.

Benefits: Your lock is safer and you're more protected while using your knife.

How it works: ILS consists of a lever with an elbow which prevents the locking liner from slipping down the blade ramp. The safety automatically engages when you open your knife. When you're done using your knife, press down on the ILS thumb rest and slide the locking liner over to disengage the safety. Found on CRKT Models: No Time Off (models 5350, 5351)

LAWKS® knife safety

What it is: A manually-operated safety mechanism for folding knives, invented by Ron Lake and Michael Walker.

Benefits: Sliding the LAWKS® lever forward sets a pin between the locking liner and the frame.  This pin acts as an additional layer of safety, so the locking liner is less likely to disengage during use.

How it works: To engage the safety push the LAWKS® level forward.  To close the knife, pull the LAWKS® lever back, slide the locking liner over, and fold the blade into the closed position.

Found on CRKT models: Thunderbolt™, Hissatsu™ 2 Folder, M4™, Folding Razel™, Fire Spark™.

Patents: LAWKS is protected by U.S. Patent 5,596,808.

SERRATIONS

08-M21-SF-Veff-Sm

Veff™ Serrations

What it is: A unique design of angled and scalloped serrations invented by Tom Veff which improve cutting through stranded and tough materials.

Benefits: Gives much faster slicing when cutting through rope, cord, webbing, canvas, and vegetation. The serration tips do not snag the way conventional serrations do when cutting materials such as fabric and nylon rope.

How it works: The larger angled serrations present a continuously changing angle which feeds material into the cut as you pull.

Found on CRKT models: Ignitor®, My Tighe™, Mini My Tighe™, Notorious™, Premonition™, Tuition®, Summa®, M16®-G10, M21™ G10, Ultima™.

Patents: Veff™ angled serrations are covered by U.S. Patent No. D559,939.

08-M21-SF-Veff-Sm

Veff™ Flat Top Serrations

What it is: Veff™ Flat Top Serrations

Benefits: The serrations are unrivaled at a variety of everyday cutting tasks. Cardboard and rope are easily dispatched without snagging and catching. The serrations are preferred by many due to their exceptional cutting of fibrous materials.

How it works: The deep custom design of the scalloped edges of the Veff™ Flat Top Serrations are designed to slice easily through a diversity of materials. The short pauses in between the scallops create a running ridge where the edge maintains contact with the desired cutting material. Due to their open design, they are also easier (than other serrations) to sharpen and maintain with a sharpening system such as the Veff Sharp™, which is also designed by Tom Veff and is available through CRKT (model VEFF1).

Found on CRKT models: The new Veff™ Flat Top Serrations can be found on the following new 2013 models; Ripple Stainless (models K406BXS & K406GXS), Enticer (model 1061) and Liong Mah Design #6 (model 6521).

Bear Claw™

What it is: A short hawksbill fixed blade designed by Russ Kommer. It is available in three edge/tip combinations for specific tasks.

Benefits: The blade profile draws material into the blade as it cuts, making it easy to cut rope, cord, webbing, or vegetation in a single pull cut.

How it works: When a concave hawksbill blade is drawn in a straight line, the blade tends to feed material into the cut. The Razor-Sharp Edge is designed for general cutting and personal defense. The Serrated Edge with Sharp Tip is ideal for cutting vegetation and stringy materials. The Serrated Edge with Blunt Tip results in a safe seat belt cutter which will not accidentally penetrate. The blade finger hole assures good grip in slippery conditions.
