M4-02 description
Custom knife maker and Knife makers' Guild member Kit Carson is widely known for his M16® design, which we offer in many CRKT production models. But since 1990, Kit's most consistent selling custom model has been his classic M4. In his usual unassuming manner, Kit says, "I guess you'd say it's my flagship custom. It's simple, with form following function. No tricks that look slick but aren't worth a flip in your hand. I've made many variations on it, from exotic collectibles to working tacticals, in maybe 20 versions. But I still get more and more calls to make the M4."

This year we're offering the M4 design in Kit's smaller every day carry (E.D.C.) size. The new M4-02 lightweight model features white bone scales and contrasting black G10 bolsters, hand contoured like a Carson custom. (A LAWKS® safety cannot be fitted with this bolster.)

While we were engineering it, we decided to add some more value by offering our OutBurst® assisted opening. The OutBurst mechanism instantly springs the blade fully open after you have opened the blade approximately 30 degrees. M4 models have dual thumb studs for ambidextrous one-hand opening and bronze bearings and lubrous washers at the adjustable blade pivot for smooth, fast action.

The 3.25" blade is a high-hollow-grind drop point of premium 8Cr13MoV stainless steel in a bead-blast finish with a Razor-Sharp edge.

Our heavy-duty InterFrame build is true to Kit's design, with dual stainless steel liners, one locking, and a stainless steel back spacer.

All M4 models have high-mounted pocket/gear clips.

So here you have a friendly E.D.C. knife that fits the hand naturally for all kinds of cutting and carving tasks. Like Kit, it's a bit unassuming, but it's a knife you'll come back to year after year.

A well designed and manufacturered tool. In future revisions, strongly recommend tweaking the thumb stud. It's too small and sharp - almost unusable. Otherwise, great looking and functional knife.

Smooth handle, good action , like the blade and the look. I carry it when I get dressed up.

I purchased two for gifts. Great heft looks solid, I liked the knives immediately. One worked flawlessly, the other has a weak spring on the outburst. It would only open part way. I put gun oil on pivot points and that helped. Practiced opening so much have lost feeling in my thumb and index finger. I wish the buttons were larger and less sharp. Totally happy with one, deciding whether to send the other back... Evaluating whether to order a third so I can have one. Ted Mesa, AZ

Great knife. Very smooth handle and feels great in the palm. The bumper for your thumb to get the knife out is a little awkward at first but it just takes a few tries to get used to it. Super sharp blade.

I purchased my CRKT M4-02 a little over three months ago. I must say that I truly love this knife. It works great and was sharp out of the box. My only problem is that now, three months later, I noticed one of the nuts that hold the casing together was coming loose. Two days later I found that it had actually come all of the way out. -- Luckily for me, it fell into my pocket and not somewhere on the ground. What size driver do I need to screw it back into place, or should I just sent it in to CRKT? Jonathan

Must say that I am very content with my purchase. I use to have a different CRKT knife and misplaced it over the years and decided to make another well recommended purchase. I was unaware of the spring loaded feature before I had bought the knife, so that was a pleasant surprise. I actually didn't even hold the knife before I bought, I just knew it would be perfect for me, which it is I guess I can disagree with Brain's comment because this sucker was RAZOR SHARP and still is. Don't plan on starting up a knife collecting for I'm super content with this only one. Keep up the amazing work you guys. I recommend your brand whenever pocket knifes are the topic. Have a good one and be safe with the blade.

I received the knife today and the only criticism I have is that it was not razor sharp as the ad stated. I was able to finally get a razor edge on it but the tip took a lot of work to get it sharp. I was surprised that it was not already razor sharp as most new knives I have received are. Besides that it is a very well constructed knife and the Outburst assisted opening works great. Very quick and solid. Brian Quilcene WA. Olympic peninsula. ***CRKT RESPONSE - Brian - Thank you for letting us know. Each knife is QA'd right here in Tualatin before it gets shipped. It is a very rare occurrence. Please let us know if you'd like to send the knife back, we have the best warranty in the industry and we can take care of that for you. Thank you, CRKT

The looks of this knife is very good. The bone and G10 give a great feel in the hand. These materials add a little to the thickness but not ucomfortable in the pocket. The flip out buttons have very sharp edges which is hard on the thumb but the sharp edges are going away with time. The flip out feature is not as easy as I would like but I expect it to get smoother with age as well. The blade is excellent. This knife has the look and craftmanship to last a very long time. I really like this knife.
